French Possessives — How to Use the Exercise

A quick-start guide for the interactive HTML learning tool  ·  Created by Dr Daniel Chan, February 2026

📚 What You'll Learn

This exercise teaches you how to express possession in French using two structures:

  • Possessive adjectivesmon, ma, mes / ton, ta, tes / son, sa, ses…
  • Stress pronounsC'est le cahier de… / Le cahier est à moi.

You will practise converting between these two structures in both directions across eight common classroom objects.

🗂 The Two Tabs

📝 Main Exercise

You are given a word-group + owner (e.g. Le cahier est — à moi) and must form the correct possessive sentence: C'est mon cahier.

Three difficulty levels available.

⭐ Bonus Page Bonus

The reverse challenge: you are given the possessive sentence (e.g. C'est son cahier.) and must write the full equivalent using à + pronoun: Le cahier est à lui. or à elle.

🖱 Using the Main Exercise

Step-by-step
  • Step 1: Use the two drop-down menus to pick a word-group (Le cahier est, La souris est…) and an owner (à moi, à toi, à lui…). Or click 🎲 Générez for a random pick.
  • Step 2: Two SVG images appear — one for the object, one for the owner. They help you visualise the sentence.
  • Step 3: Complete the sentence in the answer area, then click ✅ Je vérifie to check.
  • Step 4: Read the feedback, then click 🔊 J'écoute to hear the correct sentence, or ✏️ Je refais to try a new one.

🎯 Difficulty Levels (Main Exercise)

Click the difficulty button in the header to cycle through three levels. After each answer you can also use the 🚀 Je progresse or ⬇ Je régresse buttons.

Level What you do Hint given?
Facile Choose only the possessive adjective from a short drop-down (mon / ma / mes…). The rest of the sentence is shown. ✅ Yes — C'est is pre-filled
Moyen Choose both the verb form (C'est / Ce sont) and the possessive from a full list. Partial
Difficile Type the complete sentence from memory with no help. ❌ None
💡 Recommended path: Start at Facile to get familiar with the patterns, then work up to Difficile once you feel confident.

⭐ Using the Bonus Exercise

  • Step 1: A sentence with a possessive adjective is displayed automatically (e.g. C'est son agrafeuse.). Click 🎲 Nouvelle question to get a different one.
  • Step 2: Type the equivalent sentence using Le/La/Les… est/sont à… in the text box (e.g. L'agrafeuse est à lui. or L'agrafeuse est à elle.).
  • Step 3: Click ✅ Je vérifie to check. When a possessive is ambiguous (e.g. son = à lui or à elle), both answers are accepted and a note is shown.
💡 Challenge: The Bonus exercise is intentionally harder — it tests whether you can work backwards from a possessive to its owner. Try it after mastering the Main exercise at Difficile.
